I was stationed at Chicksands 1953-1956 and lived in a Henlow Camp rental but cannot recall how I got from there to Chicksands each work day to do USAF duties.

A lovely website with some very memory evoking photos.I know how popular Percy is in some quarters! How nice to see him in all his glory. I am also very proud of my mum, Sue Hayhurst!

Ted Harris (edward.harris1@ntlworld.com) May 8, 2005, 5:39 pm
I've started researching my family tree, my Gt grandfather, Charles Harris, was born in Campton 4.4.1865 to Samuel and Emma (nee Newman). Emma was a third generation Camptonian, Samuel had been imported from Shillington. In 1881 they were living at Pinford Holes, does it still exist? Are there any decendents of Lucy, Henry, Cephas John, Lois, and Emma in the village?
Nice site, I spent quite some time reading all the info and will visit in the summer.

Barbara Thompson (barbara414@iprimus.com.au) May 8, 2005, 5:39 pm
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could tell me the names of Robert Bloomfield's children and when they were born, My Great Grandmother was a Jane Bloomfield and my Grandmother always said she was related to the poet. Regards Barbara.

Sylvia and John Kirk (sylviajohnkirk@aol.com) May 8, 2005, 5:41 pm
We were thinking of moving to Campton in order to experience village life, but since finding Pat’s Website we can now enjoy it all from our armchair.
Great site full of interesting articles. Congratulations Pat
Thanks.
Sylvia and John

Philip Hoskins (philiphkns@aol.com) May 8, 2005, 5:42 pm
Since seeing Barbara Thompson's query about Bloomfield's grandchildren, I have written to her with details of his grandchildren and their offspring. I think I also will have disappointed by saying that the definitive family tree compiled by the Revd Harry Bloomfield shows that no issue of Robert lived to present times to continue his line. This is also confirmed by William Wickett who
wrote an authoritative biography of Bloomfield.Although Barbara Thompson may not be a direct descendant of the poet Robert Bloomfield, she will have a family connection to a fine man and a poet of genius.

Julie Leonard (juliealeonard@hotmail.com) May 8, 2005, 5:43 pm
I'm researching my family tree, trying to trace relatives of my Grandma - Rose Devereux born in Campton 22.8.1889, mother Martha formerly Newman, father William Devereux. Martha had a sister Nellie and 2 other sisters?, Ada born 1885ish and Annie born 1891ish. Martha might have had brothers Alfred and Arthur and a sister Emma born about 1870, they lived in Mill Lane, Campton. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Sarah Bilcock (shani.course@hotmail.com) May 8, 2005, 5:44 pm
I am trying to trace Colin Muir, he was posted to Italy in July 2002. If anyone knows where he is now please contact me as soon as possible.

James "Hank" Carter (hankjr77@hotmail.com) May 8, 2005, 5:44 pm
I've recently been touring all the "chicksands" sites and, talking about "taking you back in time", this has really done it. Thanks for your time and commitment in helping us "old farts" relive some of our most cherished past. Hank (chicksands, Sept 75 to Sept 77)
PS Does anyone remember Mike Huskins from N.C. ? If so pass on my email TKS

Ted Harris (edward.harris1@ntlworld.com) May 8, 2005, 5:45 pm
What a gem this website has been. Thanks to my first post and the time put in by David, I was able in August to meet with a relative who shares my name, for those who understand we are 4th cousins once removed. (David I am putting an article together for the magazine I hope to be able to make the Oct 15th deadline) I got sidetracked by Julie Leonard's entry, this evening I think I have the evidence to show that we are 5th cousins.

I have many fond memories of Chicksands and Bedfordshire from my time spent there with the USAF 1963-65 Loved the area, the people and plan to return.

Sarah Lambley (slambley@jvcpro.co.uk) May 8, 2005, 5:47 pm
I think the website is great and I would love to see even more old historical pictures on this site, im sure they're hard to come by. I am aslo wondering if anyone has any pictures of 24 Greenway, one of two set back semi detached cream cottages nearly opposite the old post house & cow field. I would love to know when they were built, who lived there and what they once looked like after undergoing so many changes (including many were doing!)Any info would be great.

Donald Pull (don@vpull.fsnet.co.uk) May 8, 2005, 5:48 pm
I recently attempted to buy four old picture postcards - circa 1920 - through ebay. The cards showed The Manor - without trees, just saplings lining its drive - St. Francis Home, the Shefford Village Pump and another was of Shefford War Memorial - unfortuately I failed to secure these items.

Donald Pull (don@vpull.fsnet.co.uk) May 8, 2005, 5:49 pm
In the event I failed to secure these items (see below); if the person who eventually obtained the cards lives in the local area, I would be interested to hear from them with a view to seeking permission to make camera copies, in order that a set could be lodged with Shefford/Bedford Public Library.

I would also like to know if they are held locally for a second reason - namely that I can then stop trying to locate them!

Rob Ingram (tracyingram@btopenworld.com) May 8, 2005, 5:50 pm

While playing with the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses, following families I came across Emma Harris marrying Charles Ernest Dilley Jan-Mar 1901. Anyone reading this with this couple as parents, grandparents or greatgrandparents? If so we have Emma's mother Emma Harris nee Newman as a common ancestor. If these name do ring some bells please get in touch and say hi.
Thanks

My friends and I used to visit Chicksands in the early 70's we had some fab evenings, wish I could turn the clock back to happier days. I lived and worked in Bedford (the Bernie Inn steak house in the High street) which a lot of the lads from the camp would visit, as they were always assured of a lovely meal and even lovelier staff!!

Danny Pugh (dannypugh@comcast.net) October 13, 2005, 7:14 pm
I was at Chicksands from 1969-72. Have been back to visit friends in Shefford, Bedford, Luton a few times. They have come to visit me, here in Virginia. I helped deliver milk with Paul McCallum in Bedford.

Dennis, Karls father (D1gator@comcast,net) October 15, 2005, 3:32 am
Remember Milton Keynes new movie theater complex? Took the family there often to see movies. One in particular "Back to the Future" had a scene of an old American gas station with attendents checking oil, pumping gas, and cleaning windshield, etc. It got a lot of laughs from the Americans but not many Brits understood the humor. But the base was beautiful and the people were great. Did work with the Bedford Drug Squad and remember many "do's", sing-alongs, and tomato and butter sandwiches. Wish we could turn back the clock.

Karl (kdahlin@cox.net) October 15, 2005, 3:32 am
My dad was stationed there (OSI) from about 85-88. I was 10-ish. Lived down the street from Angela and Jessica. Was in scouts on base with Joe and Matt Guidotti. Elvis Nubie lived a few blocks from me- best friend. Played soccer with Coach Carl. They let us play in the british league. Always lost. Andre scored a goal and it was like we won the season. Hah hah. Used to ride bikes to the Burger Barn and play the arcade games near the MTV video machine. I lived next to the bridal path (queens way). RIght out back was the ball field and newarby was the school where I went to fourth grade. Mr. Pendleton. He made us learn to serve Tea. I hate tea to this day. Wow, so much to remember!

Hello, everyone. My Vincent Kesby was stationed there from 1990-94. Someone might remember Jennifer, Sarah, or Rita. I was just trying to get ahold of anyone that might remember me. I saw an email from Anita Kelley back in 2001, but her email doesn't work. If a Nori Atkins ever reads this, girl you better get ahold of me. Steve Norton, write me sometime, I know we didn't depart on good terms. I went to middle school there and went Alconbury for my freshman year and part of my sophmore year. I would love to hear from anyone that remembers me. I went to visit my grandparents in Jan '05 and stopped up at Chicksands. The british guards let me on base. It was so cool to drive around there after 10 years. Brought back some good memories. Wow, so many happy thoughts. Hope to hear from someone soon.

Robin Maybury (nibornm@gmail.com) January 2, 2006, 9:29 pm
02Jan06: I bought my first house in Meppershall, Orchard Close actually, in 1979 and enjoyed living in this picturesque part of Bedfordshire for 3 years. I enjoyed playing the organ at the over 900 yr old church in Arlesey and was friendly with the Williams family, one of whom still runs this website. I have fond memories of learning about the "lepper squints" at Arelesey church and had fun playing Russian (or Bar) billiards at the pub in Shefford. I became a proud father of Anthea, whilst living in Meppershall with my wonderful wife from Yorkshire, Jean. We now live in California, with our now 3 young adults, in the countryside of Sonoma County, famous for fine wine and beautiful Tuscany-like scenery. We are about 50 miles north of San Francisco just outside the town of Sebastopol. We wish you all a happy and healthy 2006.

Howard Heathfield (howard.heathfield@get-the-web.com) January 3, 2006, 11:17 am
I am researching family history, visited this site because so many of my ancestors came from this area, Campton, Clophill and Haynes. Many lived in Mill Lane and I am intrigued by the photo of a Mill Lane cottage, could they be a Heathfield family in the photo?
Does anyone have further info on this photo?

Harold Kirk (usfsadsack@yahoo.com) January 9, 2006, 5:27 am
I was stationed at Chicksands 63- 64- 65. 2167 Com Sqd. I made some very good friends in England while I was there. In fact we go back to England every year to visit. I have walked Sandy Lane a few times, just to remember, but never been back on the base becausse of the RAF being there now. I have never been to any reunions and in fact just started to getting into the computer on some of these websites. But if another reunion is going to happen I surely want to be there because I can plan My yearly trip at that time.... I have friends in Cambridge and lost some friends in Bedford and was never able to find them. My wife and I have relly enjoyed every trip there. She loves every part of it.

I am looking for anyone who remembers Chaplain Lt. Col. Richard S. McPhee. He served at RAF Chicksands as the protestant chaplain from 1969 to 1973. His 50th anniversary of his ordination will be held in April 2006 and I am gathering any "quips, quotes and memories" from his past. I have a few, as I am his daughter, but am looking from some from elsewhere that would put a smile on his face as we surprise him with the celebration he is not expecting. Thank you in advance if you respond to this.

Roger Ward (gilbert1133@tesco.net) August 8, 2006, 1:15 pm
Calling all USAF personnel who were at RAF Chicsands 1950-75. During this period there were in situ around the
estate, various places which now have sadly disappeared. Three were mentioned in the book, "Chicksands" written by the 3 young airmen in 1958 and which was later re-issued in 1963 as "Legend & Lore". Does anyone have photographs of these which the "Friends of Chicksands Priory" could have copies of. They were the statues in the rose garden; a mock ruin which was demolished in 1972 to make way for the car park outside Bldg 600; a covered shelter on the old hopgrounds which was demolisted when the Antenna was erected. All were part of the renovations by James Wyatt, 1813-15.
Two of the 3 airmen have been found, Paul Lejoi & August Trotmann. We are still trying to trace Richard Humphrey.
Take a look at our website:
chicksandspriory.co.uk
Please help. Thank you

I have found a few of my old friends, would like to help others locate their friends, buddies, mates etc, (HINT) Boys are easier to find, than girls, (Because THEY change their names), SO if it's a girl you want to find, it would help to know her Dad's or Brother's names as well. Thanks.

What those two have done is typical of there non productive manner to the club

The truth is I great respect for John Chambers , Pete Sharp Keith Cullerton and Mick Litchfield who are I SENSE THE SOLID BASE OF CLUB
I regret not picking Micky more than I did during the 80- 81 SEASON
With Roy Hayday as well I would imagine you have a BRILLIANT BOOT ROOM LIKE THE BOOT ROOM at Anfield in the 8OS

Hello everyone. My parents, Bill and Connie Guidotti, was stationed at Chicksands from 84'-90'. My brother Joe and I went to school on base during that time. Cool to see that Karl, John, Krista, and Julie found this site. It would be cool to talk to you all and see how everyone turned out. There are some people that I have numbers to and/or have seen since leaving Chicksands (ie, John McLendon, Mike Norton, Nicky Sasamen, Brent Buck, Kyle Yocum, Jamal Singleton, Rolando Frausto, my brother Joe-go figure). I think most of our parents ended up in Maryland or Texas from what I had seen. Anyway, talk to you guys later.

Kimberly Jenkins (now Washburn) (Kimmie77@juno.com) September 22, 2007, 5:40 am
Military Brat from 79-85. Lived on Truman Place. I remember some of my teachers: Mrs. Henderson, Ms. Davis, and Mrs. Magnuson. Have talked with friends since: Angela Zelnis, Kim and Susan Coulson, Andrew Friedman and most recently Larry (Skip) Smith. While in my teen years at Chicksands I worked at the Chow Hall (Summer Hire Program) I met a couple GI’s John Alfer and Larry Mcalway (sp?) who were friends of a really cute GI named Kevin Washburn who DJ’ed a few times at the Youth Center. I dated that GI for a few weeks before returning to the states. Last touch with him for fifteen years then through chixnet he found my e-mail and we started talking. Now we are married with 2 stepchildren and three natural children of our own and another one due in Feb 08. My fondest childhood memories where at Chicksands. I would love to get in touch with John Alfer, Larry Mcalway and a British bloke named Ian Wells who my husband was good friends with.

My great grandmother was Mabel Annie Lincoln (known as Annie) born in Campton 1888 to John Lincoln & Jannet Lincoln (nee Heathfield)
Johns' parents were Richard & Catherine Lincoln and Jannets' mother was Ann Heathfield.
Both the families seem to have a history with Campton or its' surrounding villages would truly appreciate any further information anybody has or how the 'The Green' and the Lincolns were connected.

I was at the 7534th Dispensary from 65 to 67. A2C Medical Supply Tech working for SMSGT Comer Russell. I was also assigned to be an ambulance driver and taxi driver for outpatients visiting nearby medical hospitals. Some of the time I was the "Volleyball Court Maintenance Department Manager." Spent many a good lunch hour on the court. Would love to return for a visit. I know it won't be the same, but it would be an experience to treasure as I had a wonderful tour there. In my spare time I also drove a Special Services tour bus, so I saw more of the country than many.
