Just a little problem i found.....

Postby jh313 » Sat Mar 13, 2004 8:48 pm

First off.... congrats on creating another marvelous piece of software.

I am not really having problems with the vis... just a bug i think you guys should maybe try to fix.

I am running an XP2600+, 512mb, R9600, W-XP Pro, Cat3.5, Winamp2.91, and R4 1.03 :D

I can get crazy framerates at full screen (170's) which is nice but when i close the visualization window it still is using the ram.... it doesn't free it back up after closing the window. It is still using 129mb of ram eventhough it is not being used. When i close and reopen winamp it is fine so it is not hurting the computer or anything.

Could you guys also try to keep ram usage down a little (240mb on start up is a little much don't u think???? )

I'll see what i can do about stopping CPU usage - that has come up as a problem before, however I can't make R4 free up RAM when its not being used.

As for memory, i'll take a look. It may be that i'm re-loading textures lots of times, but i think the code there is working, in which case there isn't much i can do i'm afraid.

I assume most of that memory is video card/driver related though, because on my version of R4 (with around 180 predefines) R4 is only using 150mb. I guess having a DX9 card is causing much higher memory usage.

thanx for the reply

yeah, my card is direct x 9 and i'm running direct x 9.0b. It's not really a problem that is slowing down the computer i was hoping that there would be code to free the ram back up for other applications like video editing programs (ram hungry programs) without having to close winamp.

I'll look into it. Everything *should* be freed, but you can bet i have big memory leaks. The WinAmp plugin is still pretty much untested.

One easy solution is to run R4 standalone though.

The problem comes because the cards have been created for directX, and not as much effort has gone into the design for OpenGL. Most 'GL cards don't use floating point for pixel data, and so these new cards that do face quite big slowdowns when shifting data around.
