  Brief History
I started doing visuals a few years ago after I'd started learning OpenGL. I tried doing some democoding, but found it very annoying spending time getting visuals to go with the music, and also felt a bit bad using other people's music because i'm totally crud with instruments :) I remembered seeing Tripex and decided i'd give WinAmp plugins a go. My first one was 'RabidHaMsTeR's Bitchin' Vis' and just contained one scene - the point morph.

I was slightly amazed to find out so many people liked it - i think it got around 30,000 downloads in the first day. Anyway, spurred on by this I made R2, then R2v2, and then R2Extreme, which i decided to charge for. I got a reasonable amount of money from it, but actually just the same amount from doing Jobs for people who'd seen R2v2, so with the next plugin I decided to tone down the unregistered sign, go for charging the professional users only, and plug my services for vis design a lot more. We'll see how is goes...

First off I started R3, which was a Java and C++ based plugin (all the rest were Delphi). I thought this would allow people to do loads of custom stuff, but it turns out Java's garbage collector got in the way and I wasted around 6 months of effort. Still, I learnt C++ better and the next one, R4, is entirely C++, and uses a one-pass C-like compiler for custom stuff. Both R3 and R4 run standalone and work off Wave-In due to WinAmp 3's overly complicated API.

You can actually get R4 now, see the link above. Here's some info about it:
  • Entirely C++, using a C-like scripting language, and with plugin DLLs.
  • Uses OpenGL extensions such as PBuffers and Multitexturing to drastically speed up rendering and provide extra effects
  • Scenes *and* faders may be custom-made. Scripting and Native code may be mixed. Plus R4's own scenes may be inspected to see how they work.
  • Vast array of 'modules' that may be used in custom scenes. 3D scenes, then 2D effects like Emboss, Water-Simulation, Tint, Animate, that operate entirely in the video card.
