do u use dual display in spaning mode? so it could be that the right display shows the sound warning due to the warning apears in right lower corner of r4.
in r4 menue go to "sound" to check if r4 gets audio signal, if it does not, use the winamp plugin, i have the same problem on a system with NVidia NForce2 Chipset...

try in standard user account to start r4 as administrator, i always work as administrator on my system, so i dont get that problem. but i can not realy imagine why that problem in that case occure.

Sometimes the problem is caused by installing a new version of R4 over an old one wihout de-installing the old one. Try renaming R4/data/prefs.txt to prefs.bak when R4 isn't running, and restart it. Might help...
