i was trying to create dynamic filenames using it - almost the same thing that you trying to do. here Gordon's comments about strcpy() and strcat(): maybe it can helps.
it looks like strcat() broken. maybe Gordon allready fixed it - i found alternative and forget to check it back...

Gordon, is there a way, you could give us integer-string-conversion-ability?
and some easy to use string operations like: "this " + "is " + "a " + "test"

imho the best way to change amount of RGB colors components on-the-fly is using GL module, like SpOOnmAn suggest and i do too. maybe it not so gently (i'm sorry, Rova! ), but it works and reduction of framerate is insignificant.

then, can you show me, how to do that?
I did't get it :S
